About Michael Bates

Professional Statement

Dr. Bates is a physician in the division of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Dayton Children's Hospital. He has been named one of the Best Doctors in America - a doctor that other doctors trust the most - multiple times, including in 2019. He came to Dayton from Mission Children's Specialists of Asheville, North Carolina. But he's no stranger to the Buckeye state. He received his pediatric and pediatric gastroenterology training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and was then a faculty member there for 10 years. Dr. Bates earned his bachelor of science, medical degree, and Ph.D. at Duke University. He has more than 40 papers and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks and has had research funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Bates has special interests in treating children with congenital and genetic disorders of the digestive system and celiac disease. When asked why he chose to specialize in pediatric gastroenterology he responded, "I enjoy the breadth of pediatric gastroenterology. We see patients of all ages with conditions ranging from relatively simple and self-limited to very complex, chronic conditions. And talking with kids about pooping keeps you from taking yourself too seriously!" One of his favorite things about working with children is "their capacity to be a kid no matter what is happening".

Dr. Bates was so nice! Very thorough with listening, ordering labs, ordering other tests. First impression was that we are excited to work with him for our 12 year old daughter!

Dr. Bates and his entire team have always treated us with the most respect I’ve ever been treated with at a doctors office. He and his team always sit and talk with us—taking as much time as we need. The fiasco leading up to my son being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease was made as gentle as possible by their caring hands and hearts!
