About

Professional Statement

Dr. Lionel Chow is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist at Dayton Children's. He cares for children with blood disorders and all types of childhood cancer. He has special expertise in childhood brain tumors and tumors related to Neurofibromatosis Type 1, Neurofibromatosis Type 2 and Tuberous Sclerosis. These complex conditions often require care from many specialists. Dr. Chow helps families navigate that journey by providing the most up-to-date treatment options while coordinating care to support each child’s overall health, development and quality of life.

Dr. Chow believes families make the best decisions when they have clear, understandable information. He takes time to explain diagnoses, treatments and possible side effects so patients, families and the care team can work together toward the best outcomes. As a strong advocate for children and young adults, Dr. Chow focuses not only on curing disease but also on helping patients achieve the best possible long-term function and reach their full potential. His goal is to ensure every child receives the support they need to thrive during treatment and beyond.

Dr. Chow was great. Unfortunately, just the wait time was really ridiculous to me. Our appointment was at 3:30. He did not come in until 4:35. I think patient time is important. I realize they have to spend time with each patient, but maybe the scheduling should be a little bit better than over an hour difference from appointment time.

The entire hematology/oncology team is nothing short of amazing. From the administrative team to the nursing staff, the child life specialist team and the doctors have all been kind, empathetic, supportive and thorough. As most can imagine, Hem/onc isn't the place any parent wants to have to visit, but this team has made it not only tolerable, but delightful. Dr Chow is the type of physician all physicians should strive to be. He is kind, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable. Our family has felt complete confidence in his care. He takes the time to thoroughly explain things to us and help guide us in our son's care. The nurses have been welcoming and always taken great care of us at every visit. Child life has always been available and sweet and planned a wonderful celebration for our sons end of therapy and we can't thank them and all involved in his celebration enough. Though I wish we never needed them I feel so blessed to have been served by them and will always hold a special place in my heart for them all. Thank you all for doing such a tremendous job, one in which can not be easy, but is so profoundly important.

For the first time in our cancer journey we met Dr. Chow. Not only did he fully explain the process our child also made sure our family had access to all available resources day one. We couldn't be happier to finally find a place that valued our questions but took the time to answer any questions we had. I've never met a Dr. who explained in detail the full process. We will highly recommend to everyone Dr. Chow.
