Jessica McCarthy, PsyD

Dr. Jessica McCarthy is a pediatric psychologist for the gastroenterology division at Dayton Children's. She specializes in helping children and teens manage the emotional, behavioral and day-to-day challenges that can accompany gastrointestinal conditions. Dr. McCarthy works closely with GI medical providers to support children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs), constipation and encopresis, and other gastrointestinal conditions. Dr. McCarthy uses evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavioral therapy and gut-directed hypnosis, to help children better understand and manage symptoms, improve daily functioning and feel more confident in everyday life. 

Dr. McCarthy understands that families often arrive with questions like, “Why does my child’s stomach hurt all the time?” or “Can anxiety cause stomach problems in kids?” Her goal is for families to leave feeling heard, understood and reassured that what they are experiencing is real and manageable. By partnering closely with children, caregivers and their medical team, she helps families better understand what is happening and provides practical tools to help children feel better. Outside of work, Dr. McCarthy enjoys reading, traveling, spending time with her family, and catching up on a good show.
